The study of Buddhism in China is of importance to the world because of its influence on the Chinese way of life throughout history. The decline of Buddhism in China during the last few centuries should not obscure the fact that when the religion was enjoying prestige and popularity, it influenced Chinese culture in many ways and left lasting impressions on Chinese life. Neo-Confucianism was stimulated in its development by a number of Buddhist ideas. Certain features of Taoism, such as its canon and pantheon, were taken over from Buddhism.
